As a relatively new method of geospatial data collection, drone (or UAV/UAS) technology neatly complements existing techniques, filling the existing data gap between large-area satellite and manned aircraft imagery, and smaller coverage, time-consuming, but highly accurate collection using terrestrial surveying instruments.
“The key thing to appreciate is that aerial imaging drones, like the eBee, are not competing against traditional aerial photography. They’re really a complementary technology,” says senseFly’s Brock Ryder, a surveyor with over 20 years’ industry experience. “Traditionally there was a gap between land surveying and the point at which it was cost effective to move up to aerial photography with manned aircraft. This is the gap that drones fill. They also therefore provide a great opportunity for aerial photography companies to expand their operations, allowing these firms to fulfill smaller projects that they might have missed out on before.”
